We need your help for an experiment!
The European Commission has proposed rules for the future European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) and next week some Bloggingportal.eu editors will organise a workshop at the social media conference re:publica 10 in Berlin to discuss some of the campaigning issues around this new tool.
For this workshop we want to try a little experiment and we therefore need your help:
Below (in italics) you will find a short text that conforms with the rules of a European Citizens’ Initiative as put forward by the EU Commission: title (max. 100 characters), subject matter (max. 200 characters), and description (max. 500 characters).
We want to get this text translated into as many official and non-official EU languages as possible by next Thursday morning (15 April, 10 am) .
So if you speak one or several European languages, help us to translate the text and publish the translation in the comments to this post.
And if you know others from other countries who could help with other languages: Invite them to join the experiment!

It’s actually interesting to see that a translation into other EU languages can be longer than the character limit – which in my opinion raises questions about a standardised limit across all languages…
I guess we will need a review mechanism for checking and validating the translations. E.g. OASIS XLIFF standard has workflow and status tracking, so reviewers may mark a single translation fragment as invalid.

Let me say this: When I had the (concrete) idea for this experiment yesterday I was pretty sure we could manage to get this done until next Thursday. But I did not expect that we’d manage within 20 hours.
This shows that the Eurosphere definitely exists online and that we should not be pessimistic regarding the involvement of European citizens in a common public space.
We should also use the success of this experiment to pressure on the European institutions to make it much easier to run European Citizens’ Initiative campaigns online.

Would be nice to get those, too, although due to the character set problems the texts would need to be published elsewhere and then linked here.
I actually think that it will be important to reach out to any EU citizen with the citizens’ initiative, independent of which language they speak – but it is clear that all linguistic communities would need to feel co-responsible for translating/communicating through brokers in these campaigns.

As usual, the problem sits between the keyboard and the chair and nowhere else. Scroll 3 comments up to some some Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic (”Russian” for you) and some “unusual” Latin letters akin to those used in Turkish. (Plus Yi, Korean, Hebrew and Armenian.) Just convert to NCRs before pasting in the comment form.
Read my lips: There’s no character set problems — just some no-brainer setting in the comment entering module that is easy to go around of.
